Welcome To The American Cowboy Web Site !

"Knights Without Armor"

Cowboys, many of them illiterate Southern farm teenagers looking for adventure and a little money, built their legend during the great cattle drives in the two decades between the mid-1860's to the mid-1880's. They gathered millions of longhorn cows and mustang ponies, the largest movement of livestock in history, from the coastal prairies and brushlands of southern Texas and drove them north, over a network of thousands of miles of trails, which ended at markets in Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming and beyond. The Chisholm Trail, the Western Trail, the Loving-Goodnight Trail, the Shawnee Trail and others entered the lexicon of the American language and folk music, and the 'cowboy', became America's and the world's, 'Knights Without Armor'.

'The Remuda'
Bringing up the rear of the trail herd, was the remuda, the herd of horses, tended by the wrangler, which usually consisted of enough to have six to eight mounts per man - that the outfit supplied for the drive. Each cowboy needed a good swimming horse and one that was good for a hard run. A good night horse was also a necessity. A young and inexperienced cowboy usually acted as the wrangler for the trail drive.

Cowboys of the XIT Ranch
Some Cowboys of the XIT ranch all duded-up and getting ready to ride off to church, stopping long enough to pose for this picture in 1898.

The XIT Ranch in the 1880's was the largest range in the world under fence, and it all laid in the Texas Panhandle. Its three million acres sprawled from the old Yellow House headquarters, near what is now Lubbock, Texas, northward to the Oklahoma Panhandle, in an irregular strip that was 30 miles wide, and covered portions of ten counties. In 1885, the first Long Horn cattle rolled onto the XIT.
Along with the many other vast ranches in the region, the XIT fully established 'the way of the cowboy' on the Plains.
